The Southwest Business District is located near Midway Airport, houses several major employers – including Nabisco and Holy Cross Hospital – and is home to a diverse customer base.

It is estimated that the households located around the business district spend up to 44% of their retail dollars outside the area. This expenditure leakage represents enormous untapped potential. Business owners located in Special Service Area (SSA) #3 benefit from enhanced programs and services that develop, strengthen, and promote retail business in the 63rd Street shopping district.

For the past twenty-six years, SSA #3 has included approximately 300 businesses located in a concentrated commercial district along a three-mile stretch of 63rd street. In late 2009, the Growth Commission began the process of expanding the district to more than twice its original size, creating even greater opportunity for the local business community.
